Contamination on the web and where is it coming from?

There are a number of sources of contamination in any process. In web applications some sources are:

  • The roll of material - in many cases this can be the largest source of contamination especially with paper and fiber based material.
  • Environment factors- Shop floor verses a white room or rated clean room. Proximity to outside doors
  • Near by processes - are there dusty processes near by such as breaking down corrugated boxes, sanding, slitting or other processes that generate dust.
  • Aggressive operations in the machine - stationary turning bars, embossing, slitting that will generate dust and or break fibers
  • Keeping the area clean around the process or machine is always a good first step.

How is the contamination causing a problem in the process?

  • Health and safety and House keeping - process generates so much dust it is a house keeping and heath and safety issue to the plant.
  • The Contamination causes quality issues with printing, lamination, causing rejects in house or at customer

How clean does the process have to be to have a reliable, repeatable process that meets the standards for the product?

Setting a goal to remove all contamination may make any cleaning project very expensive and have a low or negative Return on Investment (ROI). It is better to understand your process as best you can. Removing 80-90+% of partials over a certain size is a more realistic goal and will generate a better Return on investment (ROI) on the web cleaner project.

Many web cleaning manufactures mention cleaning to very small partial size. They usually do not mention what percentage of the particals that size they are cleaning. Contact web cleaners rely on a tacky roll of material to clean a surface much like the lint roller. Contact cleaner can clean very small particales with the tacky surface is new and fresh. Like a lint roller the effectivness of the cleaning goes down as the material build up on the tacky roll. There are sometimes transfere rollers to clean the debris off the tacky roller, or a layer is removed from the roll to expose clean material, or the roll is replaced for disposal or off line cleaning. The down time and cost of maintaning and or replacing the tacky roll material has to be factored in to the operating cost with contact web cleaners. Also many processes do not want anything touching the surcase of the material which will excluse contact web cleaners.
